Technology Dependency
Until it's Not There
Mon May 23rd
Eagle eyed readers will have spotted that yesterday's blog was sent with an old email. Local production difficulties, in the absence of a Telus technician, resulted in our link to the outside world being tethered through an iPhone. The Macbook kept freezing and did so just as the email update was being saved!
It is bad form to blame others when a problem arises. BUT, Telus were booked for the move at the end of March, they confirmed two weeks ago that all was properly scheduled when I rang to check. Saturday they failed to arrive. Twice. The promised rebooked service for Sunday afternoon was cancelled an hour before it was due and is now in for Fri May 27th.
The 'manager' who rang back after I explained 'I was unhappy' (use your imagination) promised to try and improve on the date and said there would be a conversation about the inconvenience. "we dropped the ball several times". This I knew. Why do some organisations not understand that most/many people want good service, not 10% off the bill when it goes wrong. Rant over - for now!
Irritation aside, how dependent we have become on new technology? Most services out here are delivered by fibre to the house. We have a gigabit connection. Well we will have a gigabit connection when it's connected, and everything is streamed. Terrestrial broadcast technology is on the wane. FM and MW still delivers radio. For aficionados I'm told the FM is a single frequency network unlike BBC R4 in the UK, which uses several frequencies around the country. Without internet, we have no TV, no audio streaming, unless we use an iPhone. That said mobile 5G (or LTE locally) is readily available, which gives a 160 Gbps download and 30 Gbps upload, but tethering and streaming chews up data and is flaky. We are in a poor signal area! Hey ho.
Our UK shipment arrives today. Monday is a BC holiday - 'Victoria Day'. Public servants have the day off. Commercial organisations not, which is why the movers are inbound. More boxes to be unpacked and furniture assembled. Anybody want any cardboard boxes? Why they chose the end of a long weekend to deliver our UK stuff is a surprise as the ferries will be busy going back. We'll keep you posted on Telus, deliveries et al.
A few pics of the new gaff.
