Ferry inbound to Langdale
Fri Dec 17th

With Christmas around the corner there can be few who are not contemplating the impact of the latest Omicron variant on being able to get together with family, particularly if they are overseas.  Although the stats for BC and Canada as a whole are proportionality lower than the UK's figures, Canadians are being 'advised' not to travel internationally at Christmas.  More announcements are being made daily and visitors have to self-isolate/quarantine for two days in non-shared accommodation.  Fred's sister who was due to arrive on Christmas Eve, has had to postpone her trip, as we feared, further restrictions are likely to be put in place in the next few days.

Snow capped mainland mountains

Canada is significantly behind the UK in rolling out booster jabs so it is a surprise that the numbers are not worse than they are.  BC had 763 new cases yesterday and 183 hospitalized in a population of just of 5 million.  There is talk of ramping up booster roll out, but no concrete information.

Around us the mountains are all snowcapped and it's interesting to see how the freezing layer varies day by day with boundary between the snow covered areas and green trees regularly changing.

Mt Elphinstone up behind us has trees to the peak which are now shrouded in snow.

The local Black Tailed deer have been back on the road, a mother and two rather large fawns, probably the ones that have been around since the summer.  I'm not sure how long they will stay together as a family.

They seem unbothered by Jack's or my presence.  They just chew and stare!

Cliff Gilker Prov Park is back open, though some of the trails are still shut because of tree falls or damage to some of the bridges over Clack and Roberts Creeks.

Clack Creek Falls
The Falls on Clack Creek are still flowing well and the nodding tree, that was caught in the Falls further up the creek has been pushed downstream and ceased its perpetual nodding

We heard this morning that a shipping container and shipping vessel slot has been found.  The container is due to be packed on Jan 10th and leave Southampton on Jan 18th.  They say it will arrive in Vancouver on Feb 9th, which is quicker than I expected.  I wonder if given port congestion, rail line disruption, customs clearance etc., it may take a little longer.

Either way it will good to be reunited with our personal possessions.  I hope we'll get details of the ship nearer the time so we can track its progress.

In other news, my camera is back from Nikon, which first went off at the end of August!

And there was an earthquake measuring 3.5 on an island just off Victoria (capital of BC on the lower tip of Van Island) this morning.  Although it was felt in metro Vancouver - we slept through it!

Some more images from the week.
