Thrashing in Bath

Rain Stops Play Starts

Hopkins Landing - Morning Walk
Sun Oct 17th

The thrashing took place in the City of Bath when the home team were given a rugby lesson by Saracens in a palindromic 17-71 drubbing.  Bath have now lost all of the opening games in the Premiership and are bottom of the league.  The Sarries game was a great game to watch, even for Bath supporters.  Bath probably learnt more today from the opposition than their own coaching staff.

My fellow Brit dog-walker with the Rhodesian Ridgeback, is a Gloucester supporter.  They drew 25-25 to London Irish in Brentford.  Much less embarrassing!  On the plus side, at least we're not paying subs to Bath now we're in Canada!

By Sunday afternoon the rain of the last few days finally stopped and we got out to play without wet weather gear.  In the local area we'd had 154mm of rain over Friday and Saturday and a modest 15.4mm Sunday.  Roads, creeks and trails have been running with water.  The average annual precipitation is 1300mm - so more than 13% of the annual rainfall in 3 days.

The road below the house was awash on Saturday fed by a flow of water running through the garden.

Sunday afternoon we walked Gliff Gilker Park which has a number of creeks and previously dry river beds.  We bumped into a walker who said the rain and flood water was the worst she'd seen on the Coast since 1981.  The creeks were pretty impressive.  CBC were carrying a report with advice that people should be careful with creeks around some forest areas because of risks from the flood water.  In North Vancouver a number of trails had been shut, and Norvan Falls, a hike we did back in April was also closed.

It was amazing to see the difference in just a few days on one of the falls in Cliff Gilker Park.

The heatwave that preceded the current run of wet weather impacted the wine crops in the Okanagan. Yields are down but quality is up and the mood of wine growers is positive. Wine growers are 'excited about the quality' of the 2021 harvest which is good news as we develop our taste for BC wines.

While up on Van Island we found a rather good 2019 Ex Nihilo Pinot Noir.  The first case has just been delivered!

On the way back from Cliff Gilker on Sunday afternoon one of the local Coyotes was running along the road.  Fred managed to catch some footage of it disappearing into a small-holding.
