Wild Fires
BC State of Emergency
Living on the Sunshine Coast one can feel a little distant from the rest of BC and Canada as a whole. British Columbia has declared a 'State of Emergency' less than one month after ending its Covid State of Emergency.
"More than 3,000 square kilometres of land have been burned by 1,145 wildfires in B.C. this season so far, which is three times the 10-year average for this time of year, according to B.C. Wildfire Service director of operations Cliff Chapman."
To put that in to context, Wiltshire, our home county in the UK is 3,485 km2. An area close to the total size of Wiltshire, is or has been on fire.
On the Sunshine Coast there are no active fires. Across BC there are 277, up 18 in the last two days. BC needs rain, none is forecast.
“Public safety is always our first priority, and as wildfire activity is expected to increase, this is a progressive step in our wildfire response to make sure British Columbia has access to extraordinary powers under the Emergency Program Act,” Farnworth said. “In a briefing last night, I received word that we’ll be facing a few days of very difficult weather in the Interior. This declaration will address the potential of a mass evacuation scenario and provide our government with the means to secure the accommodation spaces necessary to house our citizens, if necessary.”
..... and also accommodate the 3000 firefighters trying to gain control of the fires.
Meanwhile, Fred is pleased with her lettuce leaf variety of basil, I have been setting up my woodturning workshop, Fred has been playing more tennis and my Land Rover roof rails and bars failed to arrive! Watch this space.

Tonight's sunset, with the sun behind us.
Out of interest given the rainfall shortage, what is the water supply you are on? Mains or well or something else?
ReplyDeleteMains water (unmetered) and septic tank. We have water restrictions at the moment and it's likely to become more restrictive.
