More Rain

Day Replanned

Mixal Lake

John Henry's

The morning walk down to Mixal Lake never disappoints.  A quick stroll in between showers, the lake was perfectly still and quiet.  The view may be the same but every day's scene is different.  The reflection of one of the island lakes, the mountains behind and clouds overhead was one of the best we've enjoyed.

Beside the lake is Camp Burley, a scout 'wilderness' camp.  As a result of the Pandemic it looks even more of a wildness than usual.

It is an odd coincidence, but 500m down the beach from our rental at Bonnie Brook near Gibsons, was Camp Byng.  Named after Julian Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy, a former Governor General of Canada who had previously led the Canadian Forces at Vimy Ridge.

Camp Burley does not have the same UK connections but is named after an active and long-serving scout leader, Norman Burley. He'd had a lifetime involvement with Scouting in Vancouver and later the Sunshine Coast.

Today's planned BBQ was abandoned as the rain persisted and grew heavier as the morning went on.

Time for a run as I still haven't got back to my pre-quarantine fitness yet.

I ran alongside Mixal Lake then Garden Bay Lake down to John Henry's, our afternoon beer spot.

Despite the weather is was a lovely run and being lakeside for much of the run, meant it was relatively level.  We're not short of a few uphill bits around here!

No beer though, couldn't undo all the good work getting there!

We did return back there later in the afternoon for some supplies, but skipped the beer and decided it was too cold to sit outside.  We lit the cabin woodburner when we got back!

Before we abandoned John Henry's we briefly got talking to a chap who lived on Garden Bay Rd overlooking the lake.  'June can be a wet month' he said, 'look how green everywhere is'.  Now they tell us!  Compared to the May weather in the UK we should not complain, but after a couple of days of rain and more forecast, I'm minded to see if there are any warranties on the 'Sunshine Coast'.

  1. Hate to tell you, it is really hot here. Swam in Dan’s lake/pool along with the newts and frogs then sat outside drinking wine until sunset.
