A Crap Day
Loads of it!
Aside from the much needed rain (today should see the back of it), it was a day of animal poop. (Poop = US for poo!).
Checking around the garden after Jack's walk, there was a lot of fresh large animal droppings on the shallow bank down to the smaller pond. We'd had a night-time visitor!
They were larger than the usual UK deer variety, though that it what we think they were. I did break one apart and it appeared all vegetable!
We have Roosevelt Elk in the area and caught a brief glimpse of a large bull and cow on the other side of Myers Creek as we walked up the first trail this afternoon. There are also three species of deer, White-Tailed, Black-Tailed and Mule Deer. We suspect it was one of the latter that came in to the garden. Might even have been more than one as there was a lot of it! More research needed, or an early start!
The rain kept us in during the morning, but we ventured out to Spipyus Provincial Park this afternoon. The trails are well marked and intersect with forest cleared for power lines. Some of the bridges over the creeks were overdue for replacement and in places impassable, so there were one or two detours.
We were only a few minutes into the walk when we saw the Elk. Completely silent heading downstream as we headed up. By the time the camera was out from the bag which had been secured from the rain, they'd gone, as had my lens cap as I discovered when I got back to the car! It looks as though we'll be doing the same walk tomorrow!
Further on the walk we came across the former bear presence, not that recent, given the stone sat on top. A shame, I'd like to see one from a safe distance and hope I'd have it together to get some pictures in a safe way.
We shall see!
Bear or Horse? |
Nick and Lizzie were up in Whistler this last weekend and saw Black Bears twice. We carry bear bangers and repellent, just in case, hope we won't need them, but we do want to see them!
The final lump of passed animal presence looked as though it could be horse, rather than anything more dangerous.
I did my 'Dr George McGavin' investigation with a stick again and it did look distinctly vegetable!
But is it?
On the way back down the trail Jack came across a safety helmet; we're not sure what it was from. Trail-bike rider, power engineer or something else? If it was a bike-rider, the rest is gone. Clothing, rider and bike. One imagines the bear might have severe indigestion by now!
As I write this the rain is clearing and the sky turning blue.
Earlier in the week we bought a hummingbird feeder. The Rufous is "common" locally and the owner's feeders were beyond sell-by date - they leaked, so we invested in a new one.
To our delight a female Rufous pitched up this afternoon.
The shot, taken quickly is through the kitchen fly-screen so not great resolution, reassures us they are in the area. More pics to follow - we hope!
As well as the animal life, the creeks were running well after the rain of the last few days.
Very calming!
And finally. Again I seem to stumble across camouflaged vehicles. This was today's. Ten out of ten on colour, one out of 10 on effort!
