End of an Era
Christmas Lights Go Up
Fri Nov 19th
Today we completed on the sale of Eastcourt House, the end of an era and bringing to an end 33 years of Cronk stewardship.
A period that has seen the house brought back from a state of dereliction, with water and power cut off, holes in the roof, creepers growing through the windows and brickwork and damp coming in from all directions. Thirty three years which saw the children grow up and fly the nest, lots of dinner parties with fabulous friends, a couple of huge parties in the garden (a 21st for Nick and a joint 21st/50th for Ros and Fred) and a cottage garden restored to its former glory by the head gardener, Fred, and opened in the National Garden Scheme in 2010.
The end of an era, but the start of a new exciting adventure.
While we have been focussed on getting our house over the line, many BC residents have sadly been trying to save theirs.
The house in the picture is two doors away from our May rental on Bonniebrook Beach. You may have seen images I've taken before where the creek washed gravel down on to the beach and more recently, the 'valley' carved out by flood water in the rock-slide. Now more rocks and mudslide.
The two properties either side of the creek are now under evacuation orders (initially our former rental at no1980 was included). The link above covers the story in the Coast Reporter. A local contractor has been brought in to clear the debris. You may need an Instagram account to review their footage.
Following on from the BC 'State of Emergency' declared on Wednesday, further restrictions have been introduced today across the province, Friday 19th. This covered vehicle fuel purchases (max 30lit), road and boat travel, plus calls to not panic buy. Fred is chuckling all the way to her EV car charger! There are still some parts of the Coast with 'boil water' orders, washed out roads and other damage. We're reminded the Coast got away lightly!
Amongst all this havoc and gloom, great deeds are being done. Communities are working together, evacuated families are being put up in community centres or strangers' homes. A Sikh community food bank has been making 3000 extra meals and flying them in to evacuated communities, at their own expense. Boat owners are ferrying people around in the heavily flooded areas.
While all this is going on, Christmas lights are going up. At the current rate, you'll see Gibsons from space, unless we get more power cuts!
Indeed a new era. Burbage did you all proud. Not sure about the do-nuts though, unless they are wholemeal and low sugar!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on getting the house sale done! An exciting new chapter indeed. Maddy R
