Nick's in Town

Asleep by Lunchtime!

Mon Aug 2nd

Lunchtime
Nick and Lizzie arrived in Whistler late Sunday evening and the first text pinged.   "Want to meet for an early morning canoe or swim".  The pressure was on.

Nick was planning a swim and we could canoe or swim.  It wasn't the plan.  Fred was going to have a gentle walk with Jack, while I took the pain for both of us! In the end Fred, Jack and I canoed around the lake.

It kinda set the pace for the day and expectation for the rest of the week!

After the morning canoe session we headed off to Rainbow park, on the other side of Alta Lake where Jack was able to enjoy another swim.   After all the early morning exertion, we headed back for lunch after a coffee in Olympic square.

The large mountain on the right at the end of the video is Whistler Mountain, the peak at the back beforehand is Blackcomb Mountain.  Tomorrow we are walking the first of the two!

For the afternoon Nick exertions suggested a walk around Train Wreck trail.  The wreck is of seven boxcars left over from an accident on August 11,  1956.  A train crew, trying to make up time, took a curve too fast in a rock gulley, blocking the line until it could be cleared.  Some of the box cars and engines were salvaged, the seven left were not worth recovering.  Seeing them in their now decorated state you can understand why.  After a number of years of people hiking in to view the wreckage the site was made in to a formal trail.

It wreckage is now described as a living museum as the boxcars have attracted graffiti artists, some well known in BC and the artwork is now celebrated.  Somewhat incongruous in the forest setting, it is quite stunning.

The other stunning aspect of the walk, was walking alongside the Checkamus River.

The power and force of the water was mesmerising.  Anything or anyone going in would not stand much chance of coming out in one piece such was the strength of the flow and the rocks, trees, waterfalls and gullies the water flowed through.

Some videos and images below.

On the way back we stopped off at Nita Lake, Nick went paddle boarding, Jack went swimming and we watched!

A quick stop off at the supermarket in Creekside and it was back to get supplies.  Nick, Lizzie and a friend were coming in for supper.

Given the plans for a Whistler Mountain hike on Tuesday, without Jack (dogs generally)  who's not allowed on the mountains, it was a relatively early night.  Dog sitter arrives at 0900!
