Roberts Creek

Lions Rugby

Yeah - Live rugby
Sat Jul 17

Frustrated that I missed the end of the Gallaher Premiership when we left the UK, I was smuggly pleased to have found a way to stream the British & Irish Lions South Africa fixtures.  Once set up, no easy task and four password changes later, we settled down to watch the Stormers v Lions.

Once we knew it worked and the rain had stopped, we set off for a walk I'd planned and return later to watch the rugby.  Many of Gibsons' roads up behind the town back on to the forested mountain-side and a number show trails heading into the backcountry.

Except the two I'd chosen to check out really didn't look like established trails.  No signs, no obvious trail heads, unimpressed navigator in the adjoining seat!

2962 Day Road
Let's head for Roberts Creek Falls, suggested Fred, followed by driving instructions.  Good call.

There were a couple of other cars in the parking area near the trailhead along with one of the best house number 'posts' we've seen on the coast.

I've no idea what vintage the truck was, but it was crying out for a rebuild!  A classic.

The falls, though not large were some of the best we have seen.  From small falls over boulders and pools that Jack loved to explore, to the two main drops of some 50' - 100' each.  The first video is the top section with small falls in the creek.  The second is the first of the two main drops.

There is something absolutely mesmerising watching water babbling over rocky stream beds and the roar of falls.  I could sit and watch them all day long,

The one incongruous feature of the falls, was the bath!  How it got there is a mystery, how you get to it also has to be resolved.  Rather nice location to have your morning scrub!

And watched over by Buddha while you bathe

The walk inevitably created a thirst so we stopped off at Sunday Cider on the way back.  They did not do flights of their brews so we had to go with what was on tap.  The pink one 'Sunday Rose' was with saskatoon berries, hibiscus and elderflower - a bit too complicated for my taste but Fred liked it.  Mine, Sunday Sesh, was made with Champagne yeast and Citra hops. Light and refreshing, less apply. Interesting!

Despite several walks and swimming, Jack still had bags of energy, so I had an early evening stroll on the beach beneath us.

My reference yesterday about the recent heatwave causing havoc with  local sea life was highlighted by one rock on the beach covered in barnacles and mussels.  Every mussel was open and dead.  The heatwave, according to news reports, coincided with particularly low tides which exposed the mussels to the heat for much longer.  One can only wonder what the effect will be on the wider ecosystem and for example the river otters often seen on the Hopkins Landing beach, feasting on them.

Dead Mussels and Barnacles

Exploration over for the day, we settled down to watch the rugby - and fell asleep!
