Chores and Trails
And Clouds
Wed Jul 7th
Clouds have been something of a rarity over the last few weeks and it remains relatively cool. A short lull in Sunshine Coast proceedings as it's back to blue skies again come the weekend. It was another early start to drop the van back in Sechelt, which needed to be returned with a full tank. I managed to choose a pump that delivered fuel at an amazingly slow rate. Twelve minutes to fill 40L of fuel. Worse, the fuel cut-out didn't work spraying me and the forecourt with fuel. 'Yes," said the attendant in the shop, "we're waiting for the engineer to come and fix it'. Perhaps you should take it out of service in the meantime I politely suggested! Grrrrr
While Fred went to buy the last of the house items from Gibsons (to be able to set up a second bedroom for when Nick and Lizzie or family or friends come to visit) and herbs for the garden, I put the new old bed together, ready for a coat of paint. Fred was keen to support the local retailers who are so friendly and helpful that it made sense to 'shop local' rather than online ordering. It's all part of the experience of settling into a new community, Fred said, ok then.....
The hummingbird feeder is now in regular use by a pair of Anna's Hummingbirds. In Garden Bay we had the brighter coloured Rufous Hummingbirds. Though a duller colour, the dark head of the male still turns an iridescent red when it catches the light. They seem unbothered by Jack or either of us standing on the deck and will fly up to within 2ft of our face to check us out.
In the afternoon, we drove up to the Sprockids Regional Park, a maze of forested bike and hiking trails with the Langdale Falls off to the east side. We hiked up to the falls and though the foot of the falls was accessible, the last 30 metres had a rope to help you down, and up. Fred declined the opportunity and after our recent bear encounter I was unhappy leaving her alone. So the base of the falls is on the list for another day.
The falls were modest, but still mesmerising to watch water moving over rocks.
