Forest Fires
And Floods
Tue June 29th
The heat bubble is moving inland and though the morning walk was already 23c at 0630, temperatures were noticeably cooler today on those occasions when we weren't in a store or air conditioned car.
The Hyannis trail is a lovely mix of 'old growth' trees and not so old. Many are covered with Spanish Moss, which gives the forest a slightly primordial feel, or at least what I imagine it to have been like.
There were more early walkers out trying to avoid the "midday sun".
Today the Disco had been booked into Land Rover in Richmond, to have the auto stop-start fixed. It has not worked since we bought the vehicle, coupled with a persistent low-battery sign. Three years old! We were offered a Jaguar loan car, which we declined as we were off to Ikea to get some bits and pieces for the new rental. The almost new Discovery Sport was quite fun, head-up-display on the windscreen, all glass instruments and spotless. It was soon filled with Ikea boxes, but not all the ones we wanted.
Nick was Jack-sitting and as another Ikea store had the bits we wanted it was off to Coquitlam. We were back in an hour, but IKEA visits in one day was some doing.
It was then down to U-Haul with Nick to collect a van to take it all over to Gibsons tomorrow, along with a table and chairs Fred had acquired on Facebook Marketplace. So back to Richmond to collect those!
The van's air-con was virtually non-existant, the advertised sat-nav was absent and the throaty roar when you pull away drinks petrol. Now filled with our newly purchased worldly-goods, we are ready for an early off tomorrow. Probably about 0530 to get in the queue for the first ferry.
The heat has added to the risk of forest fires and there are three of some significance in BC. They are closer to the town of Lytton that broke the hottest temperature in BC two days running.
As one part burns, Pemberton's flood evacuations have been rescinded as water levels decline. This was caused by excessive snow melt due to the high temperatures.
The analysis and commentary is firmly pointing the figure at global warming.
As I finish today's blog outside, it is a cool 26c, with a breeze. What a delight compared to the temperatures of the last three days. A week ago this would have been hot, conditioned by the last few days it is a welcome relief.
Oh and the car is not back! The workshop is backed up! Hey ho.
