Exploring Sechelt

Re-Viewing Property

Fri May 14th

Busy day today.
Bonniebrook Beach

The early morning beach walk brought the largest waves breaking on to the beach since we've been here.  Until now it's been like a mill-pond.

The waves produced a fine spray of mist that was caught by the rising sun, though difficult to capture photographically with either the phone or camera.  The waves may not look big ....but compared to the last few weeks.

The solitary Spotted Sandpiper was on the rocks at the end of the walk.  Pic below.

After breakfast, a drive-by of a property in Gibsons to decide if we want to book a viewing.  Subsequently confirmed for Saturday afternoon.

Back to base to check out some details before our second viewing of the Sechelt property scheduled for 1300.

The drive from Gibsons to Sechelt is about 20 minutes along Highway 101 - the Coast Highway.  Quite scenic but too busy to think of living alongside.

Passing Roe Deer
Viewing the house we decided we liked it just as much as before, the views around it were stunning and though more of a residential area than we'd been thinking about, the adjoining  properties are discrete, each one unique and we feel its important to be part of a neighbourhood community.

Just as we arrived a Roe deer strolled out of the adjoining property.  Certainly close to nature!

Access to local walks, trails, services, sports and shops , is all within a ten minute drive.  An earlier concern had been an absence of the sort of trails we enjoyed in North Vancouver, after more exploring of this area, the concern has receded.

The fact that the area is so quiet and with great views of the mountains and water, just a ten minute walk way, gave it top billing.  More importantly that fact that it is 3 years old rather than 300, made a compelling case, no serious property maintenance!  Decision time....

Front Door View

After the viewing we met an old friend from Fred's college days and went for a walk around Wormy Lake with her bouncy retriever Lingon, and Jack.  Maddy has been in Canada almost since leaving college and she and her husband moved to the Sunshine Coast from Vancouver three years ago.

Today was not a day to worry about bears.  Once the girls starting catching up, the bears would have been long gone.  I walked on with the dogs!

The lake was renamed Phare Lake lake in 2019 in honour of a forester who was killed tackling the Old Sechelt Mine forest fire in July 2015.  Some of the fire-blackened trees are still standing, surrounded by young growth.  It's only when you walk through the forest with its steep inclines and rocky, tree-strewn forest floor that it's possible to appreciate the difficulty firefighters would have dealing with a forest fire.

Like many walks in BC it's a 6km or 10-15 minute drive up mountain logging and mine tracks to reach the lake, but once there Phare Lake can be found nestled in the mountains, surrounded by forest, with very few people around.

A couple of paddle boarders on the lake and another couple in their small camper and that was it.

The ends and margins of the lake had marshy areas with dead trees and an abundance of Water Lilies  and Skunk Cabbage.  The water was still clean if not a little muddy underneath.  It didn't stop the dogs.  It rather looked as though Jack was leading Lingon astray!

There was a small beach area towards the end of the walk which was an opportunity to de-mud the dogs.  The trail was well marked, disappeared into the forest for some sections and climbed around outcrops that ran down to the lake

Back in Bonniebrook we had a pleasant couple of hours with our host and her partner, learning more of the area and understanding a bit more about the property market in BC.  They are both realtors.  Not for the first time I was corrected on the pronunciation of Sechelt which should be 'see-shelt'.  I'll learn.
